Foundry

The transformation from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age started over 5,000 years ago with humans extracting ores from the ground and shaping the bronze by melting or hammering the ore. This would forever change the way that tools and weapons were made. Thousands of years later, the dawn of the Iron Age began in Europe around 1100 BC by replacing brass with iron.

Foundry

Sourcing raw materials from leading global companies, Prince Minerals produces high quality products in the sizes and mineral content that are beneficial to foundries. Prince works directly with customers and through longstanding distributor relationships to develop the best products to meet specific individual customer needs and ensure consistent supply and timely service.

Prince Minerals offers the following market leading products for use in the Foundry industry:

BlackCAST®

BlackCAST® is used in core sand and no-bake molds for Gray Iron, Ductile Iron and Steel foundry applications.
BlackCAST® has the ability to greatly reduce or eliminate veining and porosity in castings. A typical addition rate of BlackCAST® is 2% to 5%. Prince Minerals offers five different sizes of BlackCAST® for foundry use.

ChromeCAST®

ChromeCAST® sand is used in core and molding sand for Gray Iron, Ductile Iron and Steel foundry applications.
ChromeCAST® is used to eliminate veining due to its chill effect on metal and low thermal expansion. Prince Minerals provides washed and double washed ChromeCAST® sand for foundry use.

Gilsonite

Prince Minerals’ sister company, American Gilsonite Company, is a Utah based mining operation which extracts a unique mineral called Gilsonite. Gilsonite is a solid black hydrocarbon which is found only in the Uintah Basin, Utah. Gilsonite is sold into the foundry industry as a value-added ingredient to foundry sand blends. The addition of Gilsonite facilitates a clean, smooth, and lustrous metal casting by forming a gaseous layer between the molten metal and the foundry mold, which prevents sand from sticking to the casting creating a smooth casting surface. Gilsonite has a lower ash and sulfur content than other carbon additives, a faster volatile release, a higher lustrous carbon content (35-38%), and can be used in lower quantities.

Mill Scale

Prince Minerals offers Mill Scale, which can be used to produce a carbon boil or enhanced to aid in the molding process.

PyriteMAX®

Pyritemax® is used in the foundry and steel mill industry to increase sulfur content in all forms of metal. PyriteMAX® can be added directly to melting furnaces or pouring ladles. Prince Minerals offers a coarse grind of PyriteMAX® as well as a briquette.

RedCAST®

RedCAST® is used in Gray Iron, Ductile Iron, and Steel foundry applications. RedCAST® is used in core and molding operations to eliminate porosity and ensure less severe veining applications. A typical addition rate for RedCAST® is 1% to 3%. Prince Minerals offers two grades of RedCAST® for the foundry industry.\

SureCAST™

SureCAST™ is an engineered value-added anti-veining agent.  SureCAST™ can be used for any metals and all core and molding applications.  SureCAST™ has the ability to greatly reduce or eliminate veining, penetration, and porosity defects in castings that are prone to these defects. SureCAST™ will soften when heated to allow for sand expansion allowing the core surface not to fracture. Typical addition rates for SureCAST™ are 2% to 6%.

ZirCAST® (Zirconium Silicate, Zircon Sand and Flour)

ZirCAST® sand is used in Gray Iron, Steel, and Aluminum Cosworth processes. ZirCAST® is primarily used for its chill affect on metal and its ability to reduce or eliminate veining.

ZirCAST® flour is used in refractive coatings as a way to insulate cores and molds due to Zircon’s low thermal expansion properties. Prince Minerals offers two sizes for refractive coating applications.

Prince Minerals Limited, based in Stoke-on-Trent, UK, offers the following products for the European investment castings industry.   These products are used as additives in complex castings that require high levels of precision.

  • Zircon
  • Fused Silica
  • Calcined Zircon
  • Cobalt Aluminate
